Shōdo (小豆島)

Where the small bean become an olive, culture and cultivation attempt a syncretism with the west. Deep rooted is the devotion to the Queen Mother, the one who listen to the world’s sounds. Like a Virgin of Mercy stands in the middle of the island elarging drops of compassion to the people. On the mountain top, the mystery of the big stone tell us about a more ancient genesis of the island and the interconnection between points in the archipelago.

Right under the feet of the multi-named kannon-sama has been preserved the popular enterteinment of the Edo period, a unique kabuki stage played by the islanders with a special part performed by children. This happening once a year now was some time ago more frequent with more styles and theatres.
